Pretty Passions, Fine Fashions #60

The Bling Ring and Alexa Chung

On Wednesday I saw The Bling Ring. It seems to only be showing in London so I travelled there and it was worth it. It featured Sofia Coppola's classic dreamy teen vibes, but was much more contemporary and realistic than The Virgin Suicides. It really makes you think about the impact of celebrity culture.

Just when I thought that Alexa could not get any cooler, I found this photograph. The Smiths + the Chanel 2.55 + Alexa= more perfection than I can handle. I need to recreate this outfit as soon as possible.

Pretty Zine

For a lifetime, I have been planning to make a zine. I hope that you will be pleased to know that I fiiiiiinally have done. It's called 'Pretty' and is 38 A5-ish pages long. You can now purchase a paper copy of a PDF download in my etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/PPrettyFFashions

Alternatively, if you have made a zine yourself I would love to do a zine swap. You can email me at sophie.wilson09a@hotmail.co.uk

Here are a few pages so that you can get a general idea of the sort of zine that 'Pretty' is.

Pretty Passions, Fine Fashions #59

American Psycho and Patti Smith

The aesthetic inspiration for this week's ~vibe~ initially came from the film, American Psycho, which I watched last week. Usually I prefer things that lean away from perfection, but this week I have been inspired by the untarnished decor of the fabulously wealthy. I have also been rewatching the first series of Gossip Girl this week so my hunger for luxury goes without saying.

Despite my adoration for luxurious aesthetics this week, the style icon in my mind has been Patti Smith. For sixth form in September I will not have to wear a school uniform (yay x 10000) but I will have to dress in smart workwear. Basically, I'm planning on dressing like Patti Smith on the cover of Horses (one of the best albums ever ever ever by the way.) Topshop currently have a range of jewellery that pays homage to horses. I would either like to get a necklace or a brooch to accessorize the over sized suit.

liebster award and versatile blogger award

Liebster Award

Mabel from Mabel's Mind nominated me for the Liebster Award.

THE RULES

  • You must share 11 things about yourself.
  • Answer the 11 questions that your tagger has given you.
  • Choose 11 other blogs for the nomination. Nominees must have under 200 followers on Google Friend Connect.
  • Leave 11 questions for your nominees.
  • Lastly, thank the person that nominated you and link back to their blog.

11 things about myself

  • Today I watched Breakfast at Tiffany's for the first time. I really liked it. I want to watch the film again. I'd also like to read the book soon.
  • I often imagine my life being made into a film with Smiths songs being played constantly in the background.
  • I've been vegan for about a month now.
  • I spend too much time on YouTube watching Smiths concerts.
  • Mango is my favourite fruit
  • I wrote a little book of short stories when I was 5 and I still have them. The main story was about a balloon that flew off into the sky then fell into brambles and burst/died. Cheery for a 5 year-old, I know.
  • I have two guinea pigs, called Alvin and Theodore, like the chipmunks in Alvin and the Chipmunks
  • When I was little my favourite Disney princess was Jasmine from Aladdin. It's probably Belle from Beauty and the Beast now.
  • My favourite book is The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
  • My name is probably the most un-google-able name ever because everyone has the same name as me.
  • I have a hoard fashion magazines.

Something really fun like Grease. I think I'd play Rizzo.

Tweed & Suede & High Cheekbones

Today in Paris, Karl Lagerfeld showcased his Fall 2013 couture collection. Along with the classic Chanel tweed, came thigh high suede brown boots; perfect for the coming winter months. However, this summer will hopefully be too warm for them just yet.

In yet another of Lagerfeld's invigorating recreations of the classic tweed suit, the skirt is brought down to ankle sweeping lengths. The whole collection seems quite icey. However, this time there was no iceberg. Throughout, there are hints to '80s power suits as well as more casual, distressed looking tweed.

There is a great versatility in this collection. There is a diversity of attitudes amongst the models which is shown by varying hair lengths and facial expressions. The outfits range from workwear to smart casual to full scale party wear.

Although each outfit has a thick belt around the waist, the structure of the skirts and dresses appear slightly drop waisted. This hints back to the original Coco Chanel little black dress and the other fashions of Coco's heydays in the 1920s.

Within the party wear part of the collection, the boots become more irregular. Some dresses demand to be worn with ankle boots to look more dainty. However, there is something quite rebellious about swapping stilettos or cute court shoes for boots.

There are lots of references to geometrical shapes. Some of the dresses look like they have been paper woven because of all the little squares. Other aspects of the collection are more luxurious with diamond shaped embellishments.

Of course there are the couture gowns that only the super rich and the celebrities hire for special events. The use of tulle and other slightly transparent fabrics looks very handsome.

Overall, the collection has very much a 'snow queen' vibe with pretty white fabrics and a light coat of glitter. However, the cosmopolitan professional woman is also present through the outfits showing that the collection reflects strength within femininity and glamour in more ways than one.
